Monthly Marker September 2022: Hanna van Gorcum

Cover: Hanna van Gorcum-Whispers

Monthly Marker 📀Hanna van Gorcum (NL) – The Weaver’s Song (2022)

Last May, Hanna released her debut solo album ‘Whispers’, a project she realised together with lots of familiar names in our folk scene! On Bandcamp, it is described as “Scandinavian folk meets medieval murder ballads, poetic lyrics are carried by a wealth of unusual instruments.”

At Castlefest, this beautiful album came into the hands of CeltCast. We noticed that next to the 13 tracks, it contains a booklet of twelve pages with all the lyrics, song details and lovely drawings! 😍

👉 Because we want to share this album with our listeners, we decided that ‘The Weaver’s song’ will be our Monthly Marker of September! Vocals for this track are by Hanna, Meidi Goh (FB) and the Student women’s choir Medusa / Studentenvrouwenkoor Medusa (FB). We will play this amazing acapella poem 5 to 6 times a day! 🤩

Livingroom Meidi and Hanna

It was one special heart-warming experience!

This was special! Really special actually. From the moment I (Cliff) got the end mix in, containing Meidi makes Music ‘s first solo mini-CD Heartstrings, up to me and my girlfriend visiting the official release concert yesterday – a concert Meidi Goh gave together with Hanna van Gorcum and Abe de Verteller (the storyteller) – it was one special heartwarming experience.

I not only loved listening to Meidi’s beautiful music, but also loved talking with Meidi about the background of that music. ‘Just to put it into context’ became a key sentence the last two weeks. That way I learned about the difference between baroque and classical singing. I understand how Heartstrings was recorded. And heard the touching story behind the seven stringed bass viol Meidi plays.

Heartstrings is a mini CD that combines Meidi’s love for old classical music and english folk. The lyrics are poetic and have an Elisabethan feel to them. And the voices, well they are stunning, the stars on this mini CD. Want to know more, then just follow the link and read all about Meidi’s first solo CD Heartstrings. I sincerely hope it will not be her last one.
