Monthly Marker November 2022: Sowulo

Cover: Sowulo-Wurdiz

New month, new Monthly Marker! 🤩

SowuloÆt wega ġelætan (Wurdiz, 2022) 📀

As we are entering the darker half of the year in the northern hemisphere, we want to bring you the immersive experience of the Nordic Dark Folk that Sowulo has to offer. This song is from the album ‘Wurdiz’ (Destiny), which reflects on the crossroads we encounter and the choices we face in life. ‘Æt wega ġelætan’ specifically, dives deeper into the struggle of dealing with the unexpected situations we can find ourselves in.

We had the privilege of witnessing the first public performance of the full ensemble at this year’s Castlefest, and subsequently at Middeleeuws Winschoten twice. We wholeheartedly recommend you check when Sowulo will be playing next to take you along on their journey. Meanwhile, as a precursor, we hope you’ll enjoy our new Monthly Marker!

Musical greetings, Alex Sealgaire 🎻

Monthly Marker October 2022: MANdolinMAN & Ansatz Der Maschine

New Daily Disc & new Monthly Marker 📀

MANdolinMAN & Ansatz Der Maschine (BE) – Haspeldans (Album Houtekiet, 2022)

On the 18th of March 2021, during the pandemic and lockdown, we watched the livestream of Studio Trad: MANdolinMAN – Houtekiet. A pagan ‘Gospel’ about the origin of civilization, but at the same time a blueprint of the general human, life and death. Masterfully told and played by Jeroen Lenaerts, text written by Jonas Van Thielen.

We were in a kind of trance. The story and sound reached our hearts and afterwards we were talking about it regularly. This stream is still on FB, please watch it to travel this road with us!

And then, half a year ago, this amazing album fell on the doormat of CeltCast HQ and we fell in love for the second time! Last summer, we roamed through Belgium, and on the road we played this album non-stop! It’s difficult to describe the feeling it brings you. Maybe, it feels like a “Narnia journey” to the history of “Houtekiet”, the novel by Gerard Walschap (1939).

This album received lots of beautiful and praising reviews! You will find the links to those on their FB Page. On top of this, the music of MANdolinMAN is used for the new film “Leuven Bierstad”, which tells the complete history of Leuven beer from the Middle Ages to today. Info: www.leuvenbierstad.be

The album itself contains a booklet (14p) with a description of each instrumental song, so parts of the story and mystical drawings. In total it’s a piece of art to enjoy to the max. Chose a rainy Sunday to travel this journey. 🥰

Novel: Houtekiet – Gerard Walschap (1939)

The history of the natural man Jan Houtekiet, a wanderer whose birth or origin is unknown. He lives in complete freedom, enjoys life greedily and doesn’t mind either god or command. To him, only counts the voice of the heart and the satisfaction of one’s senses. No one dares to resist the extremely strong Houtekiet. The farmer girl Lien completely loses her heart to him. Jan Houtekiet builds a hut in the forest on the grounds of the castle and Lien moves in with him. It’s the village Deps’ first house. Other people come to Deps and the village starts to grow. 📚

Musical greetings, Ilona CeltCast

Monthly Marker September 2022: Hanna van Gorcum

Cover: Hanna van Gorcum-Whispers

Monthly Marker 📀Hanna van Gorcum (NL) – The Weaver’s Song (2022)

Last May, Hanna released her debut solo album ‘Whispers’, a project she realised together with lots of familiar names in our folk scene! On Bandcamp, it is described as “Scandinavian folk meets medieval murder ballads, poetic lyrics are carried by a wealth of unusual instruments.”

At Castlefest, this beautiful album came into the hands of CeltCast. We noticed that next to the 13 tracks, it contains a booklet of twelve pages with all the lyrics, song details and lovely drawings! 😍

👉 Because we want to share this album with our listeners, we decided that ‘The Weaver’s song’ will be our Monthly Marker of September! Vocals for this track are by Hanna, Meidi Goh (FB) and the Student women’s choir Medusa / Studentenvrouwenkoor Medusa (FB). We will play this amazing acapella poem 5 to 6 times a day! 🤩
